The Mariana Islands Water Operator Association hosted a workshop to explain how the new Ground Water Rule (GWR), which takes effect on December 1, 2009, will affect your Public Water System. Personnel from DEQ presented the information. DEQ is encouraged all PWS owners and/or managers to attend this workshop. Attendance at this workshop was not required by DEQ, but PWSs that attended received important information that may help them decide how to best respond to DEQ’s recent letter about the ground water rule.
Workshop Topics:
The discussions at this workshop attempted to answer the following questions about the ground water rule:
What are the consequences of my PWS declaring that we provide 4-log virus treatment (or not)?
What is meant by 4-log virus treatment, and how is it determined?
Can PWSs that do not use chlorine for disinfection get credit for 4-log virus treatment?
Can PWSs that use membrane filtration (reverse-osmosis) get credit for 4-log virus treatment?
How do consecutive water systems sample their source water, if they have a total coliform positive sample in their distribution system?
How will the minimum chlorine residual be determined for each system, and where should chlorine residual be measured?
What forms should be used to keep track of chlorine residual?

Handouts at this workshop included a copy of the letter DEQ sent all of the PWSs that use groundwater as a source, the response form and example calculations for CT, and a CT formula sheet. To get a pdf of each of these handouts, click the links above. Also, a pdf file containing the flow charts for the groundwater rule is available here: GWR Flow Charts
