speaker: Derek Chambers
Derek Chambers presented an update on the cholera outbreak in Haiti: water quality in the camps is starting to deteriorate after free water delivery is stopped and NGOs start winding down their activities. Camp size is slower getting smaller. New cases of cholera are fewer now that rainy season has ended.
There was an "outbreak" of gastroenteritus on Tinian in late January. DPH suspects it was norovirus. DEQ investigated all water systems on Tinian - but no coliform bacteria were found in any water system distribution. Derek Chambers provided an overview of norovirus and how to prevent the spread of norovirus. (There were many reported cases of norovirus in the US mainland in January and February of 2012).

Bottled Water in the CNMI
speaker: Derek Chambers
Most people on Saipan rely on bottled water for their everyday consumption needs for water since the water from the piped water utility, the Commonwealth Utilities Corporation, is too salty to drink. Derek Chambers explained why the bottled water companies are regulated by both DEQ and the Bureau of Environmental Health, that the bottled water companies are considered Public Water Systems and have to meet all National EPA drinking water requirements, and that they also have to meet the FDA guidelines for food products. Labeling requirements and bottle cleaning standards were presented.

Reverse Osmosis
speaker: Derek Chambers
Most bottled water companies in the CNMI (and hotels, restaurants, and apartment buildings) use reverse osmosis to remove salt from their water. Derek Chambers explained the differences between the categories of membrane filtration (MF - microfiltration, NF - nanofiltration, UF - ultrafiltration, and RO - reverse osmosis) and how reverse osmosis works. Disposal of the concentrate from the RO was also discussed.

Membrane Filtration for Pathogen Removal
speaker: webcasts
An archived webcast (from February 21, 2012) on pathogen removal using membrane filtration was presented. The webcast can be accessed at http//:www.virtualh2oevent.com. What we got from this webcast is that it is possible to show that membrane filtration can be used to meet the requirements of the surface water treatment rule - but challange testing of the filters (membranes) may be required. It is probably best to select filters that have already been evaluated by a third party, rather than conduct your own tests.
