Bill Gates Drinks Poop Water
Bill Gates recently announced in his "Gates Letter" that he has endorsed a new technology that converts sludge from human waste into energy and drinkable water.  Derek showed a video on how the technology works.

Elena Alexandrova provided an excellent comprehensive review of waterborne diseases including how they are transmitted, how they affect the body, and their prevalence in the United States.  Brian reviewed

LCDR Brian Bearden reviewed the physical and chemical methods for controlling microorganisms.

Case Studies in Disinfection

CAPT Derek Chambers reviewed three case studies about disease outbreaks or failures in water system disinfection systems: Cryptosporidium Outbreak in Milwaukee, WI in 1993; E. Coli outbreak in Walkerton, Ontario in 2000; and E. Coli positives on Saipan in 2004.

LCDR Brian Bearden reviewed and demonstrated (with help from CUC wastewater staff volunteers) how to don and doff PPE for wastewater workers.

Certified operators attending this training earned 3.5 hours of continuing education towards their certification renewal requirements (this class ran a bit longer than our usual class).
