On-Line CEU Options
Below is a list of alternative online continuing education opportunities for water and wastewater operators in the CNMI. I have broken these down into two categories: free and pay-for-credit.
Free CEU opportunities
FOUR WEBINAR SERIES HOSTED BY
U.S. ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION AGENCY
You need to sign up for these webinars in advance. You have to attend the live session to get CEU credit. Earlier this year (2020) I signed up for several webinars, but was never able to login at the time because there was a limit of 1,000 people at a time. Maybe they have changed since then, but good luck getting on one of these. But they are FREE.
To get announcements from EPA about upcoming webinars, click on the link below to go to the sign-up page: -------------------- Free drinking water-focused webinars typically held on the last Tuesday of the month from 2:00-3:00 pm ET (4:00-5:00 am Wednesdays Saipan) with an optional Q@A session from 3:00-3:30 pm ET.
EPA's Office of Research and Development (ORD) and Office of Water (OW) host this webinar series to communicate the latest information on solutions facing small drinking water systems. This forum allows EPA to communicate directly with the states to provide training and foster collaboration and dissemination of information. This, in turn, provides states with information and resources needed to communicate the latest scientific advancements and current guidance to their small systems. It also provides opportunity for states to share information with each other.
Attendees have the option of receiving a certificate of attendance for one contact hour for participating in the live broadcasts; additional hours may be offered for longer events. Certificates cannot be provided for viewing webinar recordings.
-------------------- Free webinars typically held every other month from 2:00-3:00 pm ET. EPA's Office of Research and Development hosts this webinar series to share current research and activities and results. Attendees have the option of receiving a certificate of attendance.
-------------------- EPA's Office of Research and Development (ORD) hosts a monthly public webinar series to share EPA resources and information that are useful, practical/applied and available to meet state research needs. Webinars typically held the third Wednesday of every month from 3:00-4:00 pm ET (5:00-6:00 am Thursdays Saipan). Attendees have the option of receiving a certificate of attendance for each webinar attended.
------------------- These webinars are offered differently than the three series above. I do not know if there are certificates available, but the material presented looks appropriate for many facilities in CNMI. WaterSense has developed a number of webinars that address different sectors and uses of water indoors and outdoors.
--------------------
WATEROPERATOR.ORG - a free resource for water operators WaterOperator.org offers a free 2 hour CEU class called Groundwater and Well Care for Public Water Systems
It appears this website is young and has not developed into a complete resource yet.
--------------------
NATIONAL RURAL WATER ASSOCIATION (NRWA)
NRWA hosts free webinars frequently, but about the only way to find out about them is to sign up for their weekly newsletter. Go to the NRWA homepage and scroll to the bottom where there is a sign up box.
NRWA uses GoToMeeting. I have been able to successfully log on to several of these webinars. After further looking back at the emails I receive from NRWA, the webinar announcements are not in the weekly newsletter. I get a separate email from NRWA with webinar announcements. At the bottom of the email, it says I get these announcements because I signed up for a class through WATERUNIVERSITY.ORG. I did create a WaterUniversity account, but I did not take a class that I remember. So if you want to get the webinar emails, go to the WATERUNIVERSITY.ORG link mentioned below and create an online account (but don't sign up for any classes) and maybe they will send you the information about free webinars.
Starting Thursday Oct 22, 2020 I will start forwarding free NRWA webinar information to the MIWOA distribution list.
-------------------
HAWAI'I RURAL WATER ASSOCIATION (HRWA)
The HRWA has offered water operators in the CNMI to enroll in any classes that they offer on-line. To find out their latest offerings check out their website. The classes are free and will count towards continuing education.--------------------
AEC DAILY
AEC Daily offers fee continuing education. These classes target the architectural, engineering and construction industries and the classes are sponsored by product manufacturers, but it is FREE and is another option if you are desperate for continuing education credits.

Pay-For-Credit opportunities
NRWA - WATER UNIVERSITY The NRWA has a training branch know as Water University. On this website there are many training classes that can count as continuing education. These classes cost around $20 per hour. I have not tried any of these classes yet, so I can not comment on how easy it is to register, pay or take a class.
--------------------
American Water Works Association (AWWA) AWWA has many on-line water operator classes. These are probably great classes, but they are relatively expensive compared to other options available. For example, one course called "Fire Hydrant Basics for Pressurized Water Systems" is a 1 hour class and costs $90 for AWWA members, and $115 for non-members. Below is a link to AWWA's eLearning course catalog. AWWA also sponsors frequent webinars that can count as continuing education (usually 1 hour). Some are free but most cost $75 for AWWA members and $ 120 for non-members. --------------------
WATER ENVIRONMENT FEDERATION (WEF)
WEF offers webinars that may be counted as continuing education. Some are free but most cost $40. To find out more about WEF webinars click on the link below.--------------------
CEU PLAN
From CEU Plan's website: CEU Plan provides affordable state approved online training solutions for the purpose of water, wastewater, environmental health, and engineering professional license renewal – recertification throughout the United States. Classes cost between $10 and $20 per credit hour. I have not taken any, so I can not comment on ease of registration, pay or taking the class.--------------------
SUNCAM
SunCam (really for engineers - but some classes are appropriate for water / wastewater operators). If you are desperate for hours, then this may be an option. Courses can be expensive ($99) but they offer weekly specials for selected courses for a lot less ($19.99 for example). I did a 4 hour credit course on Pathogens in Drinking Water for $29.95. These courses are read a pdf text, then take an on-line test. You can download the pdf text for free, and even download the test and study it for free. When you want to take the test, then you can pay for the course. Once you pass the test you can download a certificate with your name on it. Potentially very quick depending on how long it takes you to read the text and study for the test. You can also sign up for a weekly email advertising what courses are on sale. The water related courses are relatively new to the site.--------------------
ALASKA DIVISION OF ENVIRONMENTAL QUALITY (ADEC)
The ADEC has compiled a list of approved classes for water and wastewater operators. This list includes many of the courses mentioned above, but there are some correspondence course shown here that are not included above.
