Derek reviewed one of the articles in the February 2014 edition of AWWA's OpFlow magazine.  This article discussed myths and the realities of maintaining ROP membranes.

CUC's Ric Saavedra described the construction of a new WWTP for Arlington, WA that he helped build and operate.

Chemical Spill in West Virgina
speaker: Derek Chambers

A chemical spill on the Elk River near Charleston, WV occurred on January 9, 2014.  Derek showed network news clips that described the events immediately after the spill, and the effects on the Charleston, WV water system and surrounding counties.
The map of West Virginia above shows the chemical spill location, the nine counties affected by the chemical spill, the extent of the water distribution system throughout those counties, and the rivers in the area.
Chemicals, Drinking Water, Risk and Regulation

Brian provided background on how maximum contaminate levels (MCLs) are determined for chemicals, and how chemicals are chosen for regulation.  The chemical in the spill in West Virginia was an "unregualted" chemical.
