Water System Specific Information on Lead and Copper

As of March 2016 there were 70 active public water systems* in the CNMI.

Of those 70 systems - 55 are classified as either community water systems** or non-transient non-community*** water systems and are required to collect samples and test the water for lead and copper periodically.  The remaining 15 systems are classified as transient non-community water systems**** and are not required to collect samples and test the water for lead and copper.

* A public water system is "system for the provision to the public of water for human consumption through pipes...or other constructed conveyances, if such a system has at least fifteen service connections or regularly serves an average of at least 25 individuals daily at least 60 days out of the year."  Examples of public water systems in the CNMI are: Commonwealth Utilities Corporation on Saipan, Tinian and Rota; Hotels that make their own water; bottled water companies; Commonwealth Health Center; apartment buildings that have their own water supply; and restaurants that have their own water supply.
** A community water system is a public water system which serves at least 15 service connections used by year-round residents or regularly serves at least 25  year-round residents.
*** A non-transient non-community water system is a public water system that is not a community water system and that regularly serves at least 25 of the same persons over 6 months per year.
**** A transient non-community water system means a non-community water system that does not regularly servs at least 25 of the same persons over 6 months per year.
